Title: Modern antiques, or, The merry mourners, the frontispiece and title page.

Creator: O’Keeffe, John, 1747-1833.

Date: 18–

Bibliographic Citation: O’Keeffe, John, 1747-1833. Modern antiques, or, The merry mourners : a farce in two acts / by John O’Keeffe … : printed from the acting copy, with remarks biographical and critical by D.-G. … as now performed at the Theatres Royal, London : embellished with a fine engraving by Mr. Bonner, from a drawing taken in the theatre by R. Cruikshank. London : John Cumberland …, [18–]

Notes: The title page to this copy of the play Modern Antiques is notable for its insistence that the accompanying image was engraved “from a drawing taken in the theatre,” despite the inability of the reader to validate such a claim. Here we encounter the idea that the ephemerality of the theatre performance might be captured in an illustration, and subsequently, in print.
