Date: 1787

Bibliographic Citation: Centlivre, Susanna, 1667?-1723. The wonder ! : a woman keeps a secret : a comedy / written by Mrs. Centlivre. London : Printed for W. Lowndes, S. Bladon, and W. Nicoll, 1787.

Notes: Garrick appears in the role of Don Felix in Centlivre’s comic intrigue. It was a role he frequently played, and the last he performed. As in many theatrical representations of him, Garrick’s distinct facial features are accentuated. The reproducibility of Garrick’s likeness was facilitated since his expressions were informed by his use of actor manuals. This image was published after his death, and is but one example of the preservation of the actor’s fame and skill in print. Images like this became a part of patrons’ theatrical and extra-theatrical experience.
