Title: Garrick and Hogarth, by Richard Evan Sly [state 3/3], a hand-coloured lithograph.

Creator: Sly, Richard Evan.

Date: 1845

Bibliographic Citation: Sly, Richard Evan. Garrick and Hogarth, or, the artist puzzled. London : R.E. Sly and T. Houston, 1845. Hand-coloured lithograph.

Notes: This mechanical print is based on an anecdote about the difficulties William Hogarth encountered upon painting David Garrick’s portrait. Each time Hogarth thought he had captured Garrick’s likeness, the actor would change his facial expression such that the portrait no longer resembled him. This print, made some sixty-six years after his death, emphasizes the continued public fascination with Garrick’s celebrity beyond his lifetime. This interactive print draws connections between Hogarth’s painting practice, Garrick’s stage fame, and the market for mechanical prints for personal entertainment. Three of the thirty possible likenesses of Garrick are shown here.
