Bibliographic Citation: Reynolds, Joshua, Sir, 1723-1792. Seven discourses delivered in the Royal Academy : by the President. –. London : Printed for T. Cadell, 1778.
Notes: Seven Discourses was the first publication of a series of annual lectures given by Reynolds while he served in the capacity of President of the Royal Society of Arts from 1768 to 1792. The first lecture was presented in January of 1769. Reynolds’ speeches, which aimed to present artists with Academic advice on the foundations of painting, were highly influential on British art during this period. The dissemination of these lectures through print contributed to their continued influence beyond his presidency. Many of the ideas they iterated were taken up by, for instance, fellow Academician John Opie.
