Notes: Opie was Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy, specializing in portraiture and history painting. His lectures contained in this posthumous volume treat the subjects of design, invention, chiaroscuro, and colouring, respectively. They show the influence of the written works of his contemporaries Sir Joshua Reynolds, Henry Fuseli, and James Barry. The facing self-portrait was engraved from a painted original.
