Notes: This page from a commonplace book shows a poem transcribed (and quite probably written) by one Sylvania Carlota Chibnell. The poem, “Crossing the River,” is particularly interesting for how the presentation of the piece imitates a printed text. While she employs a flowing script, Chibnell is careful to maintain a precise, centred layout and crisp clean lines. The symbol she uses to separate her stanzas, reminiscent of a printer’s ornamental rules, further likens her work with printed text.
