Title: A Selection of the Correspondence of Linnaeus, fold-out lithographic reproduction of three letters to Linnaeus
Creator: Smith, James Edward, Sir, 1759-1828.
Bibliographic Citation: Smith, James Edward, Sir, 1759-1828. A Selection of the Correspondence of Linnaeus and Other Naturalists; from the Original Manuscripts. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1821.
Notes: This printed volume reproduces letters from many of Linnaeus’ most famous correspondents, among them the English explorer, Sir Joseph Banks. In letter 31, featured at the bottom, Banks asks Linnaeus for a branch from one of his specimens in exchange for favours to come.
Description: The lithographer worked to carefully capture the handwriting of the correspondents – increasing the appeal of the volume in which the publisher describes these fold-outs as “autograph” pages. A comparison of this lithograph to the adjacent manuscript reveals the same arched extensions of the “d” as by Banks’ hand.
