Title: The Illustrated Language of Flowers, letters N and O
Creator: Burke, Anna Christian.
Bibliographic Citation: Burke, Anna Christian. The Illustrated Language of Flowers. London: G. Routledge, 1858.
Notes: This slim, pocket-sized, second edition of the Burke’s Illustrated Language of Flowers was printed in 1850 in both London and New York, just as the fashion of the Language of Flowers was at its height in both England and the United States.
Physical Description: image.figure (illustration).black and white 13,5 × 19,5 cm
Description: The editor makes clear in the preface that her careful selection has ensured that a “reader will find nearly everything of interest supplied by the corresponding portions of larger and more expensive publications.” The smaller format of this work would have both proved something of a novelty and a convenience, should a reader want to have the work on hand for ready reference. Each chapter begins with a lovely woodcut, a less expensive illustrative technique which would have put this attractive volume in reach of a popular reading audience.
