Notes: This is an early example of a flap book for children. The verse on the first page reads : Adam comes first upon the stage, And Eve from out his side, Who was given to him in marriage; Turn up and see his bride. Following the instructions on the verse, the child lifts the top flap, and Adam is transformed into Eve. In the second transformation, as the child lifts the bottom flap, Eve metamorphoses into a mermaid. The physical state of this book, torn, taped, and resown, demonstrates its popularity among young readers.
