Title: Popish Plot playing cards.

Date: 1679?

Notes: This set of cards is enhanced with illustrations of the late seventeenth century fictitious Catholic conspiracy to kill Charles II. This is an example of the frequent practice of using cards for educational purposes, for instance in science, history, geography, or mathematics. The owner of this set cut the upper part of the cards, thereby cancelling their use as playing cards, and keeping only the history lesson.
