Notes: The redemptive power of reading is represented in this scene, which shows Mary Magdalen in a landscape reading a holy book. She holds a bookmark between her fingers, and the jar of ointment with which she anointed Christ’s feet lies at her side. The original painting by Correggio was destroyed in Dresden in 1945.
