Notes: Throughout the eighteenth century, Graham Dougal’s amusing chapbooks circulated the countryside on the carts of chapmen. For much of the eighteenth century, these peddlers played a key role in the informal distribution infrastructure that brought printed matter to rural farming families. As developments in print manufacturing enabled the cheaper production of more sophisticated literature, chapbooks such as these gradually declined in popularity.
